The Holsum Story

historia.jpg

How did we become the Puerto Rican family's favorite bread? Ours is an interesting story made up of delicious recipes, great ideas and hard, passionate work.

Bakers united behind a great recipe

The history of the Holsum® brand began with a cooperative of bakeries, the Long Company, in Chicago, Illinois. Mr. William Edgar Long, realized that there were many bakers in town committed to top quality products but each individually lacked the means to take their wonderful breads to the next level. Consequently, in 1908, Mr. Long convinced several fellow bakers to form a cooperative rallying behind an excellent recipe to be marketed in various cities. The original recipe and the commitment to excellence have been at the core of the company since its inception. This winning combination has turned the Holsum® brand into the best well known name in the baking industry.

Pueblo Introduces Holsum ® Quality to Puerto Rico

Holsum® bread first arrived at our shores during the second half of the 20th Century, imported to the Island from Miami by the Puerto Rico Baking company. Soon the Holsum brand became a Puerto Rican favorite. If the bread was so popular while being imported, what would happen if it was baked in the Island? Pueblo International believed it would be a great idea to invest. Holsum® Bakers of Puerto Rico, an industrial bakery, was born in 1958. The first ovens dedicated to the production of Holsum® bread were located at Barrio Minillas in Bayamón.

Boricua Inspiration offers a world of Holsum® taste

Hardly a year had passed at Holsum® Bakers of Puerto Rico, when the passion to make bread gave way to the creation of a world of baked products. Among the first local products to hit the market under the Holsum® brand, was the now famous Pound Cake. Today, the great variety of Holsum® sweets, crackers and breads reflect the inspiration of our bakers who continuously strive to satisfy the Puerto Rican love for superb baked goods, while maintaining our traditional high quality standards.

In 1971, to satisfy an increase in demand, Holsum® Bakers of Puerto Rico moved its manufacturing facilities to its present location, in Barrio Candelaria, Toa Baja. Also during the 70's, Holsum® inaugurated distribution centers in Aguadilla and Ponce.

The World Takes Notice of What's Cooking at Holsum®

In 1983 the world came to Holsum®. Holsum's® market worth and success attracted the attention of Seabord Corporation, a multinational company dedicated to the production and distribution of food with operations in diverse markets. That same year Seabord acquired Holsum®.

In the 1980's Holsum® Bakers of Puerto Rico also inaugurated the production lines for the delicious Bimbo® cookies and the Country Hearth® line of whole wheat breads.

Holsum® of Puerto Rico is divided into three areas: Holsum® of Puerto Rico, Inc. (Breads and Cakes), Caribe Bakers (Crackers), and Tienditas Holsum®.

Puerto Rican entrepreneurs acquire Holsum®

In 1998 Holsum Bakers of Puerto Rico was acquired by the company's top management, making it 100% Puerto Rican owned. In 1999 the new owners registered the company under its present name Holsum of Puerto Rico, Inc. This way, the local industry leader also became an example of Puerto Rican entrepreneurship. Today, Holsum of Puerto Rico, Inc. prides itself in setting the standards with its innovative vision, excellence and quality, while being a pillar of the Puerto Rican economy in the twenty-first century.

Holsum's Little Big Man, Don Luis Aguad Jorge

Homenaje a Don Luis Aguad

Don Luis Aguad Jorge, Holsum’s® “Little Big Man” was born in Cuba on August 25, 1925, although he says he feels 100% Puerto Rican thanks to the great affection he has received from young and old ever since he arrived on the island. He was born in Jarusco, a province of Havana, Cuba, where he met the well known Joaquín Monserrat ‘Pacheco’. He also worked in Cuban television during the 1950’s.

Don Luis arrived in Puerto Rico in the early 60’s motivated by Pacheco. For several years he worked in local TV comedies like ‘La Criada Malcriada’ and other Tommy Muñiz productions. During the 70’s he worked with Pacheco in the popular ‘Cine Recreo con Pacheco’.

In 1968 ‘Pacheco’ introduced him to Holsum’s® management. During that same year he began to work for the company as the person in charge of new product demonstrations in several supermarkets around the island. As time passed, his popularity increased to the point where speaking about Don Luis ‘El Enanito de Holsum®’,

was like speaking about the great variety of products manufactured by the company. For thirty years he represented and symbolized our products, managing to capture the imagination of thousands of kids, young people, and the not so young.

Today, Don Luis Aguad is no longer with us, but continues to be an important poart of Holsum's history. Because of his great heart and his dedication, he will always be remembered as Holsum's "Little Big Man", the man who could bring out a smile in anyone.

God bless Don Luis Aguad, Holsum's Little Big Man!
